Hubert Banks was born in 1912 in Madison, Virginia. His parents William and Mary Banks sent him to school in Virginia, and then he moved North to Ridgewood and Glen Rock, living with his Aunt and Uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mallory, of Broad Street. Banks worked for Ridgewood Floor and Rug Company before he signed up for military duty with Selective Service. He was cousins with Private, First Class, Joseph Mallory who also lost his life in World War II in the South Pacific.
Hubert Banks trained at Fort Dix, NJ, and then was sent to serve in Louisianna, Florida as part of the 27th Malaria Control Unit of the US Army before finally serving in Africa for 16 months. Hubert Banks died of injuries suffered in a car accident in November of 1944. While he was serving overseas, Banks applied to become a member of Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Ridgewood and was accepted in October 1944. Sadly, the letter of his membership never reached him.
